LATIN DESSERT - 101
Are you ready for a sweet treat?
Perfect for the Holidays or for whenever you feel the need to indulge! First things first, get your stereo or ipod out and put on some music that gets you in that happy, party, lets get ready to bake mood. Do you have the music ready? Are you sure? Don't forget to dance. Okay, then lets begin...
The best way to begin any baking project is by collecting all of the ingredients you need and putting them all on the surface you will be using.
The first thing you need to do is bake a cake. It has to cool for at least an hour so lets get started.
I like to preheat my oven while I am working on my cake mix. Cuts down on time.
The best pan to use for this dessert is a retangular 13 x 9 x 2 inch non-stick metal pan.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly butter and flour the 13 x 9 x 2 inch non-stick metal pan and set it aside. (You can use shortening or cooking spray to substitute butter).
FOR BEST RESULTS:
Use Betty Crocker Super Moist or Pillsbury Moist Supreme White or Yellow cake mix. (Either one that is on sale.)
- Follow directions on back of box to prepare mixture. (If you are making this an adult dessert, add 2 tablespoons of rum to mixture. Make yourself a rum and coke while you're at it but don't make it to strong, remember you are baking... My personal favorite for desserts is Captain Morgan Spiced Rum)
- Now start mixing for 2 minutes or until smooth…. this gives you time to dance around and enjoy that drink..
- Once all the cake ingredients are smooth you can go ahead and pour them into the baking pan you already had prepared.
- Set timer and place pan into oven for 32 minutes.
- Once timer goes off remove pan from oven and place it on a safe surface away from little ones to cool for an hour.
3 MILK GLAZE -
Tres Leches
1 (12-ounce) can evaporated milk
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 cup heavy cream or half-and-half
1 bowl and whisk for mixing
1 ladle (soup spoon)
Vanilla extract
Rum
(Now remember, only use rum when making this dessert for adults.)
READY TO MIX -
- Add 12 oz can of evaporate milk into the bowl.
- Add 14oz can of sweetened condensed milk into the bowl.
- Add 1/2 cup of heavy cream or a 1/2 cup of half-and-half and pour it into the bowl.
- Add 1 teaspoonful of vanilla extract.
- Add 2 tablespoons of rum. Time to refresh your drink...
- Whisk all together in bowl for 1 minute and put the bowl to the side.
- Now its time to get your cake. Leave cake in pan. Poke holes all over cake with a toothpick or fork. When you are done poking holes you can get your bowl with milk mixture.
- Use ladle to pick up mixture and pour over cake. Keep pouring the remainder of milk mixture with ladle all over cake until it is all gone.
- Cover the cake pan with plastic cover or plastic wrap and place into refrigerator for at least 3 hours. I like to leave it in the refrigerator over night before I cut into it. The cooler it is the better it will taste.
You can decorate the cake with a whipped topping and any type of fruit you like before serving.
I do not make my own whipped topping so I use cool whip or redi whip and throw on some marashino cherries or sliced strawberry to each slice while serving.
Its time for you to enjoy the delicious, moist, sweetness of it. Hope you like.
Let me know how it turns out for you!

I made your recipe (with the rum) last Monday for company. It was amazing! everyone raved about it, even my kids and spouse, who normally don't like tres leches. Our guest, a Latino who knows a good Latin dessert when he has one, ate two pieces and wanted to take the rest home with him! Thanks so much for sharing! I'm definitely voting this UP!
Yey! I am so glad it worked out for you. Wasn't it easy?! I'm sure your husband and kids are going to want you to make this one more often. It is soooo delicious! Again, I am so glad you all enjoyed it.
I love tres leches and will definitely try this at home! Does all of the milk get absorbed into the cake or is it squishy?
Hey Bubba, yes the milks soak into the cake so it is a bit squishy but delicious. You have to keep it in the fridge though after every serving so that it stays fresh and cool. Its like eating cake with a scoop of icecream on the side.
Does your wife have a recipe for flan? That is one that I need to perfect.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I love tres leches, but I've never made it myself. I'm going to try now.
